Michael Weatherly Reveals Why NCIS Stands Out from FBI and Law & Order!

Michael Weatherly, who left NCIS as a series regular eight years ago, made a memorable return earlier this year in the David McCallum tribute episode, “The Stories We Leave Behind.” While many know him from his role on Bull, fans still fondly remember Weatherly as Tony DiNozzo from NCIS, which is gearing up for its 22nd season.

In a recent episode of the podcast Off Duty: An NCIS Rewatch, Weatherly shared his insights on what sets NCIS apart from other procedural shows like FBI and Law & Order. Speaking with NCIS director Dennis Smith, Weatherly explained that while NCIS fits the crime procedural mold, it transcends it by blending genres. He described the show as a mix of workplace comedy, romantic thriller, and even horror elements, which, according to him, makes it unique.

Regardless of opinions on Weatherly’s perspective, it’s evident that NCIS has mastered a winning formula. The show has lasted over two decades and has spawned a franchise with six series and two more in development. Among the upcoming projects is NCIS: Tony & Ziva, which will follow the iconic characters as they embark on a thrilling journey across Europe. This Paramount+ exclusive will feature a more serialized narrative compared to traditional procedurals.

NCIS: Tony & Ziva is currently filming in Budapest and is slated for a 2025 debut on Paramount+. Meanwhile, NCIS Season 22 and the new Gibbs-centric prequel NCIS: Origins are set to premiere on Monday, October 14.
