Mark Harmon Skeptical About Bringing Cote de Pablo to ‘NCIS’—Was She Too Green!

Mark Harmon, famous for his role as Leroy Jethro Gibbs on NCIS, was initially hesitant about adding a new cast member to the show. By the time Cote de Pablo joined the series as Ziva David in its third season, Harmon had already formed strong bonds with co-stars Michael Weatherly and Pauley Perrette. He was concerned that bringing in a new actor might disrupt the ensemble’s established dynamic.

Harmon openly shared his concerns, stating, “Chemistry is a big intangible in television,” and adding that replacing a key figure could be risky. However, his apprehensions quickly dissipated when he observed de Pablo’s work ethic and professionalism on set. “I watched her interact on set, and she just exuded a genuine, hardworking attitude,” Harmon recalled. “Cote was exactly who she was every day, and that impressed me.”

Cote de Pablo, who initially felt nervous about joining NCIS, was unaware of the strong impression she had made during her audition. She felt added pressure after learning that another actor had auditioned multiple times but remained focused. During her screen test with Weatherly, she was surprised by his improvisation but managed to stay composed, a quality that played a significant role in her casting.

Producer Charles Floyd Johnson highlighted that de Pablo’s natural chemistry with Weatherly was a decisive factor in her landing the role. “When actors react authentically in the moment, sometimes magic happens,” Johnson said. The genuine connection between de Pablo and Weatherly was apparent during their audition.

After the casting decision was made, NCIS creator Donald Bellisario asked Weatherly to give de Pablo a ride home. Although she was initially reluctant, this car ride became a pivotal moment for the two actors. Weatherly, who had initially perceived de Pablo as distant, quickly discovered her to be “deeply sweet” by the end of their conversation. The ride allowed them to connect and lay the foundation for a strong working relationship.

Over time, Harmon, de Pablo, and Weatherly developed an on-screen chemistry that resonated deeply with fans. Despite Harmon’s initial concerns, de Pablo’s addition to the NCIS team proved to be the perfect fit, enhancing the dynamic and contributing to the show’s enduring success.
