Donnie Wahlberg Drops Cryptic Hint About Blue Bloods’ Future: ‘Things Are in the Works!’

Donnie Wahlberg Hints at Future Possibilities for Blue Bloods

In November 2023, CBS officially announced that Blue Bloods would be concluding its long run. However, in a recent development, Donnie Wahlberg, who portrays Danny Reagan, hinted at the possibility of “something awesome” happening after the show wraps up.

While attending a New Kids on the Block concert, Wahlberg was asked about the future of Blue Bloods. He responded, “Well, we filmed the apparent last season of Blue Bloods, and it’ll air starting in October. Maybe there’ll be something else after that.” He added, “I don’t know anything officially yet, but there are things in the works. So maybe something awesome will happen. You know I’ll do things after Blue Bloods no matter what.”

With eight remaining episodes set to premiere in October, CBS has reiterated that Blue Bloods is ending. There have been discussions of potential spin-offs featuring different characters, though CBS Studios President David Stapf recently provided an update. Speaking to Deadline in July, he said, “We don’t have anything that’s going to be in development soon, but it’s a brand, a title, and a show that is beloved. We’ve got to get it right, so we’re taking our time and trying to figure out what the next iteration of Blue Bloods is. We have a whole season to go, where we intend to celebrate how good that show is, so there’s still time for us to figure that out.”

The announcement of Blue Bloods’ cancellation came as a shock to many, including the cast. Both Donnie and his co-stars, Tom Selleck and Bridget Moynahan, have expressed their disappointment. Bridget shared her mixed feelings while appearing on The Drew Barrymore Show, saying, “I think everybody’s really upset and sad, but also happy and satiated. It’s more about saying goodbye to the people behind the characters.” She emphasized the strong bonds formed over 14 years, saying, “We’ve created such a family on set with each other and the crew — most of the crew has been with us for 14 years, so we’ve been through a lot of weddings, births, deaths, and everything. We’ve been through it all with each other.”

Tom Selleck, who plays Frank Reagan, has been vocal about his feelings toward the network’s decision. When asked by CBS News if the show was officially ending after 14 years, he remarked, “Well, that’s a good question. I will continue to think that CBS will come to their senses. We’re the third-highest scripted show in all of broadcast. We’re winning the night. All the cast wants to come back. And I can tell you this: we aren’t sliding off down a cliff. We’re doing good shows and still holding our place. So, I don’t know. You tell me!”

Earlier in the year, Tom had also hinted at CBS possibly regretting the cancellation. “CBS will find an awful lot of people aren’t ready to say goodbye to it,” he said in an interview with TV Insider. “The show’s more popular than ever, and I think the numbers will increase with the interest this year. We’re certainly not out of ideas.”

As the final episodes approach, fans and cast alike remain hopeful for a potential future for Blue Bloods, whether through a spin-off or another exciting development.
