“NCIS Co-Creator Speaks: Why Awards Were Never the Goal
In an open interview commemorating the series’ 20th anniversary, Don McGill, co-creator of NCIS alongside Donald P. Bellisario, addressed the show’s conspicuous absence from Emmy recognition. McGill expressed little astonishment, stressing that NCIS was crafted to engage audiences, not chase accolades.
“I don’t think it was ever about seeking awards,” McGill shared candidly. “It was more about capturing viewership, so it’s not surprising that Emmy consideration never really came into play.”
Echoing McGill’s sentiments, executive producer Mark Horowitz likened NCIS to a comforting indulgence: chocolate cake. “Everyone knows what chocolate cake tastes like, but you still crave it,” he mused.
Despite the lack of awards, NCIS boasts a vast following, with Horowitz highlighting its appeal across diverse demographics. “You could say the show resonates with politically conservative or rural audiences,” he observed. “But even on college campuses, everyone’s watching, even in Southern California. It’s more popular in central states than on the coasts.”
Awards notwithstanding, NCIS remains a television powerhouse, evident in its numerous spin-offs. The latest, NCIS: Sydney, is set to enthrall viewers when it premieres on Tuesday, November 14 at 8pm on CBS.
Moreover, fans can enjoy the series on demand and stream it via Paramount+, with episodes available for Paramount+ Essential subscribers a day after airing. NCIS continues to hold its place as a cornerstone of American television, captivating audiences worldwide.
NCIS airs on CBS in the US, with Seasons 1-20 streaming on Disney+ in the UK.”
