Mark Harmon, known for his portrayal of Special Agent Leroy Jethro Gibbs on NCIS, has bid farewell to the long-running series after an impressive 19 seasons. Harmon’s character made a significant exit in the fourth episode of Season 19, choosing to remain in Alaska indefinitely after wrapping up a case.
In a special featurette included in the Season 19 DVD release, Harmon expressed gratitude for the opportunity to bring Gibbs to life and highlighted the importance of keeping the character’s journey fresh and challenging. He felt that Gibbs’ decision to stay in Alaska was a genuine and fitting conclusion.
While Harmon has departed from the series, he made it clear that Gibbs is not retired but rather living a new chapter of his life in Alaska. In his final episode, Gibbs informs Special Agent Timothy McGee that he won’t be returning home.
Executive producer Steve Binder assured fans that Harmon’s departure doesn’t sever his connection to the show, leaving the door open for Gibbs’ future to unfold. CBS Entertainment President Kelly Kahl echoed this sentiment, emphasizing Harmon’s continued involvement with the series.
NCIS: The Nineteenth Season is now available on DVD, and fans can anticipate the show’s return for its 20th season on Sept. 19.
