Despite numerous shows facing cancellation in 2024, losing one of my favorites remains a tough pill to swallow. That’s why CBS generated some excitement a few months ago by mentioning plans for a Blue Bloods spinoff. While the Reagan family drama is set to wrap up as the 2024 TV schedule concludes, there have been recent discussions about potential future projects in that universe. So, what’s happening at the Eye Network?
For those who might have missed it, Paramount held a stockholders meeting in June where Global CEO Brian Robbins highlighted the impressive franchises CBS has at its disposal. During this presentation, he hinted at an “extension” in the works for Blue Bloods, reigniting speculation about a spinoff, prequel, or something similar.
Cast member Abigail Hawk has since confirmed that the network is indeed considering a spinoff. However, she noted that if it happens, it would likely not involve the Reagans or the NYPD. Hawk shared her thoughts with Hello!, stating, “There was talk of a spinoff happening. But if it did happen immediately after our series ends, it would have to be set in LA or involve a different family.”
This aligns with a report from CinemaBlend back in July, which discussed a timeline for a possible Blue Bloods spinoff, suggesting it might be further off than fans had hoped. This could be due to the show’s continued success on Friday nights, or perhaps CBS’s rapid development of various NCIS series. Either way, I was hoping for more concrete news.
Donnie Wahlberg had previously mentioned the show’s conclusion later this year, but added that “maybe something awesome will happen” for Blue Bloods fans afterward. I held onto the hope that more would come, but it seems that if there’s a new project, it might take the form of Blue Bloods: LA or feature a fresh cast, akin to the revitalization of the Suits franchise.
One encouraging note from Hawk is her emphasis on how “beloved” the show is, echoing sentiments shared by Tom Selleck and other cast members about its longevity. CBS has the freedom to make its own decisions, but it’s essential they recognize not only the commercial viability of Blue Bloods but also its emotional connection with fans. The themes of family resonate universally, and there are countless more stories to explore.
Ultimately, if a new project emerges, it sounds like it would focus on a different family rather than a continuation of the Reagans, the family viewers have come to love, particularly due to the iconic dinner table scenes that often frame the episodes. Here’s hoping there’s still time for CBS to reconsider its approach. As always, we’ll keep you updated.
