NCIS: Sydney Starts Filming in the Northern Territory—First Look!

Northern Territory Embraces NCIS: Sydney with Filming in Darwin, Boosting Local Economy and Global Profile

The Northern Territory is rolling out the red carpet for NCIS: Sydney, with new episodes now being filmed in Darwin. This global hit series has chosen the Top End as the location for two of its episodes, marking a milestone for the region as it cements its status as a prime destination for international film and television projects.

Earlier this year, a strategic partnership involving Endemol Shine Australia, CBS Studios, Paramount Australia, and Screen Territory confirmed that parts of the series would be shot in the Northern Territory. This decision is a significant outcome of the Production Attraction Incentive Program (PAIP), designed to lure high-profile projects to the region, providing economic benefits and enhancing the Territory’s global visibility.

The arrival of such major productions brings notable economic advantages. It creates local jobs, supports businesses across various sectors, and stimulates the local economy through the involvement of suppliers and professionals. The filming also offers valuable experience and skill development for the local screen industry.

NCIS: Sydney is the first international extension of the NCIS franchise to be set outside the United States. The series features a combined team of U.S. NCIS agents and the Australian Federal Police (AFP) tackling naval crimes. Since its debut, it has become a hit on Paramount+ Australia and the top new series in the U.S. for the 2023-2024 TV season, drawing over 10.2 million viewers for its premiere.

Produced by Endemol Shine Australia for CBS Studios and Paramount Australia, and distributed globally by Paramount Global Content Distribution, the show highlights both the creative and economic potential of the Northern Territory. The region’s stunning landscapes, combined with local expertise and strong governmental support, make it an attractive location for filmmakers.

The Production Attraction Incentive Program, available year-round, aims to attract major productions to the NT by offering incentives. These projects not only boost the local economy but also promote the Territory’s unique features to a worldwide audience.

Jennie Hughes, Director of Screen Territory, emphasized the program’s impact on facilitating this production:

“Screen Territory has played a crucial role in supporting NCIS: Sydney, ensuring a smooth and successful filming experience. The Territory’s diverse locations, skilled local crews, and robust government support make it an ideal choice for filmmakers. Hosting a globally recognized franchise like NCIS provides an excellent opportunity to showcase the Northern Territory’s landscapes and culture to millions, while also creating valuable local employment and economic growth.”

Sara Richardson, Head of Scripted at Endemol Shine Australia, shared her enthusiasm:

“Endemol Shine Australia is thrilled to film in the Northern Territory, highlighting the beauty of Australia’s Top End to both domestic and international audiences. Collaborating with local cast and crew, as well as engaging hundreds of extras, has been a rewarding experience. The Darwin community’s warm welcome and support have been greatly appreciated.”

Rick Maier, Creative Advisor Drama at Paramount ANZ, added:

“The Northern Territory perfectly represents Australia’s diverse landscape. We are excited and proud to explore this vibrant region with the excellent support of the NT Government. We’re thrilled to showcase the Territory’s incredible beauty to the world.”

The production of NCIS: Sydney not only shines a spotlight on the Northern Territory but also strengthens its growing reputation as a prime location for major international film and television projects. With strong government backing and a flourishing local industry, the Territory is poised to benefit from the opportunities brought by this high-profile production.
