Mark Harmon’s Big Return to Acting: What’s Next for the NCIS Star?

Mark Harmon, the longtime face of NCIS, is making a highly anticipated return to acting after stepping away from his iconic role as Leroy Jethro Gibbs. Since his departure from the series, Harmon has largely stayed out of the spotlight, focusing on his work as an executive producer. But now, he’s ready to step back in front of the camera for an exciting new project.

Mark Harmon’s Comeback: A Role in Freaky Friday 2

Harmon, who captivated audiences as Gibbs for 19 seasons, is returning to the big screen in Freaky Friday 2, the sequel to the beloved 2003 film. Reprising his role as Ryan, the fiancé of Jamie Lee Curtis’s character, Tess Coleman, Harmon’s return marks over two decades since his original appearance. The film is set for release in 2025, signaling a significant resurgence in his acting career.

In a sign of his renewed focus on acting, Harmon recently signed with the Gersh Agency, joining a star-studded roster that includes Brendan Fraser and Allison Janney. Alongside his return to acting, Harmon remains deeply involved with the NCIS franchise as an executive producer for NCIS: Origins, a prequel series exploring the early career of his character, Gibbs. Although Harmon will narrate the series, he will not appear on screen.

What to Expect from NCIS: Origins

NCIS: Origins will take viewers back to the beginning of Gibbs’s career, focusing on his early days at the Pendleton branch of NCIS. Harmon will narrate the series and produce it alongside his son, Sean Harmon. Austin Stowell stars as the younger Gibbs, while Robert Taylor steps into the role of Jackson Gibbs, originally portrayed by the late Ralph Waite. Kyle Schmid will play the legendary Mike Franks.

The show also features a talented supporting cast, including Patrick Fischler, Diany Rodriguez, Tyla Abercrombie, Mariel Molino, and Julian Black Antelope. The series is helmed by NCIS veterans Gina Lucita Monreal and David J. North, ensuring the show stays true to the spirit of the original.

In addition to his acting and producing roles, Harmon has ventured into writing, co-authoring Ghosts of Honolulu with NCIS technical advisor Leon Carroll Jr.
