Exclusive First Look at NCIS: Origins — Young Gibbs and Mike Franks in 1991

As the premiere of NCIS: Origins draws closer, TVLine has unveiled an exclusive first look at two pivotal characters in the highly anticipated prequel series. Set to debut in 10 weeks, the series will explore the early days of Leroy Jethro Gibbs and his mentor Mike Franks.

Austin Stowell steps into the role of a young Gibbs, newly minted as an agent at the NIS Camp Pendleton office in 1991. The first photos reveal Stowell in action, embodying the fresh-faced enthusiasm and determination of a young Gibbs. Kyle Schmid stars as Special Agent Mike Franks, the seasoned leader who will shape Gibbs’ career.

Longtime NCIS fans are familiar with glimpses of Gibbs’ past through flashbacks, but NCIS: Origins promises to delve deeper into his early experiences. Co-showrunner David J. North suggests that there’s much more to uncover: “Seeing Gibbs arrive at NIS on Day 1, and seeing how Gibbs became Gibbs…? You will realize there’s so much to explore.”

The series will showcase the dynamic between “probie” Gibbs and Franks in a way that hasn’t been fully explored before. According to co-showrunner Gina Lucita Monreal, “We’ve not seen that dynamic between ‘probie’ Gibbs and Mike Franks.” She adds that Gibbs’ transition from the Marines gives his character a new dimension: “Coming to NIS so fresh out of the Marines, it gives Gibbs a different kind of shading than we’ve seen before.”

North also notes the palpable sense of awe that Gibbs exhibits towards Franks, reflecting the deep respect and admiration the young agent holds for his mentor.

As anticipation builds for the October premiere, fans can look forward to discovering the formative experiences that shaped the iconic characters of Gibbs and Franks. NCIS: Origins will offer fresh insights and an engaging look back at their early careers, expanding the rich lore of the NCIS universe.
