NCIS is an American television series that blends police procedural with military drama. It revolves around a fictional team of special agents from the Naval Criminal Investigative Service, investigating crimes involving the U.S. Navy and Marine Corps. The concept and characters were initially introduced in two episodes of the CBS series JAG (Season 8, Episodes 20 and 21: “Ice Queen” and “Meltdown”).
Premiering on September 23, 2003, NCIS quickly established itself as a spin-off of JAG and has since aired twenty full seasons. It is currently syndicated on the USA Network. Co-created by Donald P. Bellisario and Don McGill, NCIS is notable for being the third-longest-running scripted, non-animated U.S. primetime TV series, surpassed only by Law & Order: Special Victims Unit (1999–present) and Law & Order (1990–2010; 2022–present). It ranks as the seventh-longest-running scripted U.S. primetime TV series overall.
