The cancellation of NCIS: Hawai’i after Season 3 left fans and showrunners in shock, especially evident in the cliffhanger ending of the season finale. Now, showrunners Jan Nash, Christopher Silber, and Matt Bosack are shedding light on what could have been in Season 4.

What Would’ve Happened in NCIS: Hawai’i Season 4, According to Showrunners

In an interview with TVLine, Nash, Silber, and Bosack shared their plans for Season 4, particularly how they intended to resolve the cliffhanger involving Maggie Shaw. “While not fully fleshed out, we had a general idea of where the Maggie story was going. It would have eventually intersected with Jane Tennant’s mother, but it was also going to move back into the dark world of Tennant’s spy past. These stories would have increased our understanding of who Jane was and also revealed more about her team,” they explained.

Plans for Season 4 also included revisiting the wedding talk between Lucy Tara and Kate Whistler from Season 3, Episode 4 “Dead on Arrival.” “We hadn’t fully landed on what was going to happen in Season 4. But there would have been some movement. Whether it would have been a wedding, meeting families, or some other thing, we didn’t know,” the showrunners noted.

Additionally, the team intended to introduce Jesse’s wife Heather Boone and his other child, delve into Ernie’s ex-wife, and continue exploring the chemistry between Vanessa Lachey’s character and LL Cool J’s character, who joined the cast in Season 3. Unfortunately, despite solid ratings, NCIS: Hawai’i was canceled, and these plans never came to fruition.

Reflecting on the surprise cancellation, the showrunners said, “We were obviously surprised. If we’d known it was coming, we probably wouldn’t have ended the series on a cliffhanger. But we are proud of the show we created.”

They concluded, “We did what we set out to do. We created a show with a strong female lead and a cast that reflected the diversity of Hawai’i and the world. We told interesting Navy crime stories while maintaining a workplace where people could hopefully do their best work and be valued for it. That gives us a lot to be proud of.”
