New NCIS Gibbs Prequel Image Fixes Major Mark Harmon Blunder!

Mark Harmon returns to the NCIS universe as the narrator for NCIS: Origins, a prequel spinoff exploring young Gibbs. The initial image of Austin Stowell as young Gibbs showed him with a longer haircut, but a new behind-the-scenes image reveals a shorter hairstyle, aligning with Gibbs’ established look during the ’90s.

Although Mark Harmon left the NCIS franchise a few years ago, his return as the narrator for NCIS: Origins doesn’t mean he will reprise his iconic role as Gibbs. Instead, he will narrate the series, which delves into Gibbs’ early years in the agency. Austin Stowell, taking over the role from Sean Harmon, will portray young Gibbs.

Gibbs has been the face of NCIS for almost two decades, and while his time as the leader of the Major Case Response Team (MCRT) is over, his story continues in NCIS: Origins. This prequel will explore previously hinted-at storylines from the flagship series. Production has just begun, and while plot details are still under wraps, new behind-the-scenes images offer a promising glimpse of what’s to come.

Initially, the promotional image for NCIS: Origins featured Stowell with a quasi-mullet, which was quickly criticized as inconsistent with Gibbs’ traditional short haircut. This deviation was considered a significant mistake, as Gibbs’ look has remained consistent in flashback scenes from that era.

Fortunately, the production team has corrected this error. Cast member Mariel Molino recently shared behind-the-scenes content showing Stowell with a much shorter haircut, true to Gibbs’ established ’90s appearance. This adjustment ensures the prequel will maintain continuity with Gibbs’ long-standing look.

Gibbs was a creature of habit, a trait from his time as a marine. His consistent practices, such as drinking coffee, working in his basement, eating at his favorite diner, and visiting the same barber, were central to his character. His appearance was a clear indicator of these habits. Throughout NCIS, Gibbs maintained his look, except for a few episodes where he couldn’t follow his usual grooming routine. It’s essential that NCIS: Origins honors this consistency despite Stowell’s recasting.
