“NCIS: Hidden Detail in Kate Todd’s Shocking Season 2 Death Revealed”
When Kate Todd (Sasha Alexander) was killed in Season 2 of “NCIS,” viewers were left stunned. In the episode “Twilight,” just after surviving a rooftop shooting, Tony DiNozzo (Michael Weatherly) and Leroy Jethro Gibbs (Mark Harmon) pick her up. Moments later, another sniper shoots her through the forehead as she jokes about never expecting to hear Gibbs praise her.
This ironic death contains a tiny visual Easter egg you might have missed. During Alexander’s guest appearance on the podcast “Off-Duty: An NCIS Rewatch,” Weatherly revealed a subtle reaction that foreshadowed Todd’s death. “When you got that shot to the head, I was standing behind you,” he explained. “If you watch the scene in slow motion, just before the digitally added dot appears, there’s a blood pack on the back of your head that bursts, and blood splatters on my face.”
Weatherly noted that he flinched just before the blood hit, as the special effects coordinator was in front of him, signaling the impending blast. This slight flinch, visible if you look closely, hints at Todd’s imminent death. Weatherly admitted he still flinches when shooting scenes involving prop guns, highlighting the challenges of working with on-set ballistics.
Both Alexander and her co-star Cote de Pablo, despite undergoing tactical training, shared their discomfort with handling guns for the series. Alexander said, “I really don’t like the guns, it really freaked me out, like how powerful they were and how scary they were.” De Pablo, who had previously expressed her real-life fear of guns, agreed and added that she also can’t stop herself from blinking whenever she has to shoot one.
Interestingly, all three actors continue to work with prop guns to this day. Alexander’s post-“NCIS” career has included roles involving gunplay, such as her portrayal of Maura Isles in the TNT procedural “Rizzoli and Isles.” Meanwhile, de Pablo and Weatherly will soon reunite on-screen when “NCIS: Tony and Ziva” hits Paramount+.
