CBS faces backlash for canceling “NCIS: Hawai’i” despite its growing fan base and good viewership numbers. CBS defends the decision, citing cost management and a revamped lineup. However, the network is also attempting to revive the “Einstein” series after two previous failed attempts, which has added to the confusion and criticism over their decision-making.
“NCIS: Hawai’i,” which debuted in 2021, quickly established a loyal following, making its cancellation particularly surprising. The network also recently canceled “So Help Me Todd” and “CSI: Vegas,” but none of these cancellations have sparked as much backlash as “NCIS: Hawai’i.” Viewers appreciate the show’s diverse ensemble and fresh storylines, with Jane Tennant being a standout character.
CBS Entertainment President Amy Reisenbach defended the cancellation, predicting better success for the revamped lineup and citing cost management and the need for stability amid the uncertainty surrounding Paramount Global’s sale. Despite these justifications, the decision seems counterintuitive. “NCIS: Hawai’i” ranked 16th overall in viewership during the 2023-2024 season and saw significant growth, with its series finale ranking 11th in terms of the largest 7-day lift for primetime endings on key broadcast networks.
Given its success, it seems illogical to end “NCIS: Hawai’i” under the guise of cost-cutting while investing in the untested “Einstein” series. The network’s decision appears short-sighted, especially considering the potential for “NCIS: Hawai’i” to reach even greater heights. The show is now the shortest-running series in the “NCIS” franchise.
There is a strong online movement petitioning for the show’s return, and CBS has a history of reversing cancellation decisions, as seen with “SWAT.” While there’s no guarantee, this increases the chances of “NCIS: Hawai’i” being uncanceled.
If CBS decides to bring back “NCIS: Hawai’i,” the next challenge is finding a slot for it. The network’s fall 2024-2025 schedule is set, with “NCIS: Origins” taking over the previous slot. Fans would prefer waiting for a mid-season comeback for “NCIS: Hawai’i” Season 4 rather than leaving the Season 3 finale cliffhanger unresolved.
