Breaking CBS Renewal Report: ‘The Equalizer’, ‘NCIS: Hawai’i’, and More! Check the Status Now!”

In the realm of broadcast network series renewals, CBS faces some challenging decisions as spring approaches. With three new drama series slated for the upcoming season—NCIS: Origins, Matlock, and Watson—alongside the surprise renewal of S.W.A.T. and the extension of Australian NCIS: Sydney, which was initially intended as a temporary replacement during a strike, the network must navigate slate purging to accommodate these additions.

This adjustment is likely to affect several remaining CBS drama series whose fate remains uncertain: The Equalizer, NCIS: Hawai’i, Elsbeth, So Help Me Todd, and CSI: Vegas. These series, including CBS’s current dramas with female leads, have performed commendably, ranking #22 or higher among all non-sports broadcast programs in linear Nielsen most current viewership ratings.

Decisions regarding these series are expected within the next two weeks, as CBS will be the first broadcaster to unveil its fall schedule on May 2. However, some determinations, such as Elsbeth’s fate, may be deferred until after the upfronts due to its recent debut.

Among these dramas, The Equalizer stands out as the highest-ranked in linear viewership, currently ranking No. 7 among all non-sports broadcast programs. Negotiations with Queen Latifah, the show’s star and executive producer, are reportedly in the final stages, with a fifth season renewal expected contingent upon her closing her deal. Additionally, there are indications that the number of episodes for The Equalizer could increase next season, possibly to 20.

Elsbeth, another CBS drama receiving favorable reviews, is anticipated to continue into the next season. Part of The Good Wife franchise and created by Michelle and Robert King, the show has shown promise, particularly in multi-platform viewing.

As for NCIS: Hawai’i, it ranks as the strongest performer among the remaining dramas, with favorable odds for renewal. However, its future is complicated by the abundance of NCIS series already slated for the next season, including the original series, NCIS: Sydney, and the upcoming Young Gibbs prequel NCIS: Origins. Despite its strong viewership and unique attributes, financial constraints and shelf space considerations pose challenges for its continuation.

While decisions regarding the fate of these dramas remain pending, CBS is confronting budgetary pressures and uncertainty surrounding its corporate future. Tight broadcast budgets necessitate tough business discussions, potentially leading to budget cuts and shortened seasons for some series.

In the comedy genre, transitions are more straightforward, with two series concluding this season and two new ones set to debut next season, including a Young Sheldon spinoff and Poppa’s House, alongside renewals for Ghosts and The Neighborhood. Overall, while drama renewals at CBS present complexities, the network is navigating these challenges with careful consideration of various factors.
